OpenAI has introduced a new feature that lets ChatGPT Free users create images using the advanced DALL-E 3 model. Initially, when DALL-E 3 launched in September, only ChatGPT Plus subscribers had access to image creation.
With this update, OpenAI is now offering the AI image generation tool to free-tier users as well, though with some restrictions. Free users can generate up to two images per day. This change is part of OpenAI’s ongoing effort to make its advanced AI tools more accessible to a broader audience.

In a recent announcement on X, OpenAI emphasized the creative opportunities now available to a broader audience. The company tweeted, “We’re rolling out the ability for ChatGPT Free users to create up to two images per day with DALL-E 3. Just ask ChatGPT to create an image for a slide deck, personalize a card for a friend, or show you what something looks like.” This post highlights the new feature’s potential for users to easily generate images for various purposes.
While earlier text-to-image systems often overlooked words or required users to master prompt engineering, DALL-E 3 stands out by generating images that closely match the provided text. With this new feature, ChatGPT automatically creates detailed prompts for DALL-E 3, helping to bring users’ ideas to life. If the resulting image isn’t quite right, users can easily ask ChatGPT to make adjustments with just a few words.
OpenAI announced that DALL-E 3 image creation would be available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers starting in early October. Like with DALL-E 2, users can reprint, sell, or merchandise the images they create with DALL-E 3.
DALL-E, DALL-E 2, and the latest DALL-E 3 are all text-to-image models developed by OpenAI using deep learning. The first version, introduced in January 2021, could create images in various styles. Now, DALL-E 3 offers even more precise image generation by closely following complex prompts.
